Etoposide belongs to a class of drugs known as topoisomerase II inhibitors, which work by interfering with the DNA in cancer cells, ultimately leading to their death.

It is typically administered intravenously, either as an injection or infusion. Etoposide may also be taken orally in capsule form, especially for certain types of leukemia.
