Molnupiravir is an antiviral medication. It works by interfering with the replication process of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, ultimately inhibiting its ability to spread and cause infection.
Molnupiravir is a prodrug that is metabolized in the body to its active form, N-hydroxycytidine triphosphate (NHC-TP). NHC-TP acts as a substrate for the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase enzyme, which incorporates it into the viral RNA during replication. This incorporation leads to errors in viral RNA synthesis, resulting in nonviable or less infectious viral particles.
